The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) has approved 1 billion USD in additional funding for the final phase of construction of Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program (ATMP) Roadway Improvement Project.
The project will see the reconfiguration of 4.4 miles of roadway in order to better manage airport and neighbourhood traffic entering, exiting and surrounding the airport.

With approval granted for the final construction package of the project, which includes the construction of reconfigured roadways, bridges, retaining walls, drainage systems, utility relocations, landscaping, lighting, signage and intelligent transportation systems; work on ingress roadways is expected to be completed before the 2028 Summer Olympics, with egress roadways expected to be completed by 2030.
The project forms part of Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) 30 billion USD capital improvement programme.
John Ackerman, CEO of LAWA, said:As part of LAWA's larger transformation, this project will make traveling through LAX smoother and safer.
It's about creating an elevated experience for our guests, team members and the local community, and we are doing it in a way that will bring millions of dollars in economic benefit to the local community members and businesses.
The most comprehensive roadway construction project at LAX in almost four decades; the works will separate airport-related traffic from local roads in order to both reduce congestion and improve access to LAX.
In total, the project will include the reconfiguration of 4.4 miles of roadways, removal of more than 500 cars at Sepulveda Boulevard at any given time, creation of protected pedestrian bridges and a implement a new multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
Elevated ingress and egress roadway systems will allow for the implementation of streamlined routes serving the airport whilst simultaneously separating airport-bound traffic from local circulation.
