Aena has reached a financing agreement worth 5.7 billion BRL (1 billion USD) with Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and Banco Santander to support the expansion and modernisation of 11 airports in Brazil.
The arrangement marks a significant step in the company’s investment programme in the country, where Aena Brasil oversees 17 airports, handling around one-fifth of national air traffic.
A major element of the investment will be the redevelopment of Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, Brazil’s second-busiest airport, where Aena plans to build a new passenger terminal and expand the aircraft apron.
Additional upgrades are planned for airports in Campo Grande, Ponta Porã, Corumbá, Santarém, Marabá, Carajás, Altamira, Uberlândia, Uberaba and Montes Claros. Together, these 11 airports served 27.5 million passengers in 2024.
Aena Brasil estimates that project activity across the network will generate more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Maurici Lucena, Aena’s Chairman and CEO said:This transaction is highly relevant as it ensures very favorable financial conditions for Aena’s most important international investment. The financing will enable the expansions and improvements required by Aena Brasil’s airports, which, like our Spanish airports, we aim to make among the safest, most efficient and most comfortable in the world. Brazil is a strategic country for Aena, and we are committed to staying and contributing to the economy growth of the regions served by our airports.
The funding package includes the issuance of 5.3 billion BRL in debentures, of which 4.24 billion BRL has been subscribed by BNDES and the remainder by Banco Santander. BNDES has also granted a Finem credit line worth 400 million BRL.
The financing will support airport development works and also contribute to the partial repayment of short-term loans previously taken out by the Aena Group and external lenders.
