Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has commenced Phase 2 of its Concourse D Widening Project with the installation of Module 6.
This work marks the beginning of the next stage in the airport’s major modernisation initiative.
Phase 1 of the project concluded on September 4, 2024, with the attachment of the first five modules to the existing concourse. The second phase will see five additional modules moved and installed by 31 January, with 19 modules planned in total by the project’s completion in the summer of 2029.
The revamped Concourse D will feature several significant improvements:
- Larger gate areas: Hold rooms will double in size with seating capacity increasing to 6,400.
- Expanded corridors: Walkway width will increase by 29 feet.
- Higher ceilings: Ceiling height will rise by 18 feet.
- Increased boarding level space: A 75% boost in square footage.
- Modernized facilities: New restrooms twice their original size and upgraded building systems.
- Optimized aircraft capacity: Concourse D will accommodate 34 Group III aircraft, eight fewer than before, reflecting the shift to larger-capacity jets.
The Concourse D Widening Project is part of ATL’s broader effort to enhance passenger experience and adapt to the evolving needs of air travel. Once complete, the upgraded concourse will provide more spacious and comfortable amenities for travellers while improving operational efficiency.
