Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has activated its new outbound baggage handling system earlier than planned, marking a major step in the airport’s wider expansion and modernisation programme.

The system, part of the Journey With AUS initiative, is designed to process up to 4,000 bags per hour, improving the reliability of baggage transfers from check-in to aircraft loading. The upgrade is expected to reduce delays linked to luggage handling and support operations as passenger numbers continue to rise.

Originally scheduled for completion in spring 2026, the project began in late 2022 and was delivered ahead of time through a partnership involving Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, Gensler, and several specialist engineering and design firms.

The system has been developed to meet long-term demand, with the airport planning for up to 37 million annual passengers in future years.

AUS Chief Executive Officer, Ghizlane Badawi said:

This project is a testament to the power of partnership between the Airport, TSA, our airline partners, and our consultants, designers, and construction teams. Together, we’re building a bigger, better AUS for the people of Austin and Central Texas by strengthening the backbone of our airport so it can better serve our community and passengers for decades to come.

The upgraded network includes 1.5 miles of new conveyor belts and enhanced screening equipment. The improvements bring the system in line with current industry standards and allow bags to move more efficiently between ticket counters, security screening, and the baggage makeup area.

The project cost approximately 241.5 million USD, funded through airport reserves, revenue sources, federal grants, and future bond proceeds.

The new system forms part of a broader series of infrastructure projects under the Journey With AUS programme, which includes terminal optimisation, additional gates, and plans for a new midfield concourse and connecting tunnel.
