Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has broken ground on a new six-gate Concourse M as part of its wider expansion programme.
Concourse M will be built on the west side of the airfield and will provide approximately 37,000 square feet of additional terminal space. The facility will have four contact gates and two walk-out gates for narrow-body aircraft.
The new concourse is being developed to maintain gate capacity while larger projects are carried out across the airport campus. It will operate separately from the Barbara Jordan Terminal and is expected to open as early as 2028.
Passengers using Concourse M will travel between the main terminal and the facility by shuttle bus. The service will operate from Gate 13, currently the only ground-level gate in the Barbara Jordan Terminal.
The concourse will include full-size and family restrooms, a nursing room, Wi-Fi, a pet relief area and passenger seating. A coffee market with 24-hour vending will also be provided under a concession agreement with Star Concessions.
Concourse M will primarily act as a reliever facility during construction of the planned 26-gate Concourse B and Tunnel project, as well as the refurbishment of Concourse A. The project forms part of Journey With AUS, the airport’s multibillion-dollar Airport Expansion and Development Program, which is intended to expand and modernise the airport over the coming years.
A second project, the Maintenance Ramp Expansion, is being delivered alongside Concourse M. It will add six aircraft parking positions and expand the ramp’s capacity to accommodate up to 18 diverted aircraft. The maintenance ramp project is scheduled for completion in 2027 and has received more than $9 million in federal funding through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant and Airport Improvement Program.
Both projects are being funded through airport revenues, cash reserves, federal grants and future airport revenue bond proceeds, with no local taxpayer funding.
The Concourse M design is being led by the Stantec/Fentress joint venture, with Hensel Phelps as prime contractor. RS&H is leading planning for the Maintenance Ramp Expansion, with Austin Bridge & Road responsible for construction.
