Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has officially opened its improved International Arrivals area, marking the first completed project under its wider Journey With AUS expansion programme.
This development brings additional capacity and modernised infrastructure to the Barbara Jordan Terminal to better accommodate the region’s increasing international passenger numbers. The upgrades are intended to support both current and future demand while maintaining operational efficiency.
The new facilities are now available to travellers, with the work finalised ahead of schedule.

The 13.8 million USD investment delivers 20,600 square feet of additional space, including expanded passenger queuing zones and upgraded baggage claim facilities. It also includes revised processing areas for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), allowing for a more streamlined entry process.
Key features of the project include:
- Dual-use baggage carousels (6 and 7) to handle both domestic and international luggage, allowing greater flexibility in operations
- Oversized baggage carousel (8), designed specifically for international arrivals, with the capacity to manage larger items and reduce manual handling requirements
- Wider processing and queuing spaces to reduce congestion and improve passenger flow during peak periods
Ghizlane Badawi, Chief Executive Officer of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said:This project is a defining example of how we’re shaping the future of air travel in Austin. The enhancements to our international arrivals experience significantly improve efficiency and comfort for passengers today while laying the foundation for a more globally connected and passenger-focused airport of tomorrow. It’s just the beginning of what the Journey With AUS expansion program will deliver for our community, our passengers, our partners, and our stakeholders.
The project was carried out by Whiting-Turner as the prime contractor, with architectural design provided by Gensler. Funding came from traditional airport sources, including airport cash reserves, revenues, and revenue bonds.
Further developments are planned as part of the Journey With AUS programme, including a new Arrivals and Departures Hall and future renovations to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. These long-term efforts are expected to continue over the next five years, with a focus on increasing capacity and improving the traveller experience.
