Birmingham Airport (BHX) has appointed Arup as the lead developer for its next Masterplan, which aims to define how the airport will evolve to serve increased numbers of passengers and airlines through to 2041.

The Masterplan will also take into account sustainability, operational efficiency and an improved passenger experience.

Birmingham Airport is the UK’s third largest airport outside London and supports employment on site for 7000 people.

BHX recently announced a 300 million GBP investment over the next four years to modernise its infrastructure, with the Masterplan set to build on this investment.

Ian Taylor, Development and Construction Director at Birmingham Airport said:

We are delighted to have Arup on board, who are world-class at planning major infrastructure projects.

Birmingham Airport is set to grow steadily in the coming years, and we need to ensure it is fit for the future—both in the terminal and on the runway. This is about ensuring the airport can accommodate future capacity efficiently and sustainably, and we’re excited to see the next chapter in our history.

Work on the Masterplan has already begun, with a draft expected to be unveiled for public consultation in summer 2026 – which will allow for feedback from both local communities and stakeholders.
