Birmingham Airport (BHX) has announced it will invest in upgrading and expanding its security area by June 2024.

The UK airport will install a next-generation security screening system that will comply with new government standards and improve the efficiency of passenger processing at peak times. Following this upgrade, passengers flying from Birmingham Airport will benefit from a quicker and smoother security process.

The investment will also enable the expansion of Birmingham Airport’s current security area to support its plan to grow customer volumes from 13 million passengers a year pre-pandemic to around 18 million a year by 2033, as outlined in its 2018 Master Plan. A new security hall is crucial to this expansion, which will help drive economic growth in the West Midlands.

Furthermore, the new system will enable Birmingham Airport to make better use of its existing space, resulting in an enlarged departures area and additional retail and seating facilities.

Nick Barton, chief executive of Birmingham Airport, said:

This investment paves the way for a better customer experience and economic growth in the West Midlands. For these reasons, I’m excited about our Next-Generation Security system.

Birmingham Airport has submitted planning application for this project to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.
