Birmingham Airport has announced the addition of two new passenger screening lanes in anticipation of its busiest year to date.

The two new lanes, which have been made possible by investments of roughly 5 million GBP, come in addition to the airport’s recently opened 60 million GBP security screening hall, which began operation in 2024.

The installation of the two new screening lanes comes following delays at the airport in 2024

Installed to screen cabin luggage, the new lanes will be capable of screening up to 3,600 passengers per hour, with the decision to install the new screening technology following delays due to last-minute Government rule changes on liquids.

Birmingham Airport has reminded passengers that current rules still state that no containers over 100ml are permissible, liquids, pastes and electrical items may be left in bags but large coats and belts must be removed before entering the screening process.

Medicines are permitted to be carried through, but will continue to require correct documentation, with baby food also permissible in high quantities following individual screening.

Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director at Birmingham Airport, said:

Last summer, some passengers experienced unacceptable lengths of queuing, so we have focused on improving the efficiencies of our processes and how we support our customers on their journey, as quickly as possible.

Since last summer, we have been relentless in our focus to make sure unacceptable queuing does not return this year. Over the course of several weeks, we will be making a string of announcements, unveiling new projects and partnerships that will enhance the passenger experience during what will be our airport’s busiest year.

The new lanes, which will be located in Zone A, will be operational during peak times, with security officers deployed to each lane as and when passenger demand dictates as such.
