Calgary International Airport (YYC) has announced the re-opening of its West Runway following two years of construction work.
The runway, one of two on-site, has received a complete rebuild and is now set to continue service for another 40 years of passenger and cargo traffic.

Calgary Airports’ President and CEO Chris Dinsdale, said:This is critical infrastructure.
We forecast that our passenger volumes could increase up to 40 per cent within the next five years. Everything we build now is made to meet that moment, to elevate passenger experience, and to make our operations more efficient and sustainable. The comprehensive work on the West Runway achieves all of that.
Originally built in 1939; the project to rehabilitate the West Runway first began in April 2024. The works saw flights diverted to other runways whilst renovation was undertaken through two construction seasons, with all work planned around a number of conservation initiatives, such as a water re-use programme and the recycling of 90% of all materials.
The project is one of the first of its kind in Canada to achieve Envision Framework certification for sustainable infrastructure.
Work on the Runway was made possible in part due to funding received from the Government of Canada through Transport Canada, with 57.7 million CAD awarded as part of the Airport Critical Infrastructure program and the remaining 142.5 million CAD funded by Calgary Airports
