Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed a phased infrastructure programme at Cape Town International Airport as part of its wider 21.7 billion ZAR (1.36 billion USD) investment across the national airport network.
The programme focuses on runway realignment, terminal expansion and apron improvements intended to address projected passenger demand and operational requirements over the coming years.

Runway Realignment
A central element of the programme is a proposed new main runway, estimated to cost about 6.39 billion ZAR. Contractor appointment is planned for December 2026.
The 3,500 metre by 60 metre runway would be shifted eastward by approximately 11.5 degrees. The change is designed to improve air traffic efficiency and create space within the airport precinct for future terminal development.
The project includes rapid exit taxiways and a partial parallel taxiway aimed at reducing runway occupancy time and improving aircraft turnaround. The runway is planned to meet Code F standards, allowing operations by larger, next-generation aircraft.
Domestic Terminal Expansion
Expansion of the domestic terminal is expected to begin in April 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and procurement processes. The Domestic Arrivals Terminal redevelopment is estimated at 2.39 billion ZAR, while the Domestic Departures Extension is projected at 500 million ZAR.

The work is intended to increase passenger processing capacity and circulation space, while providing additional contact gates, airbridges and apron capacity for aircraft parking and movement.
International Terminal Developments
Phased upgrades are also planned for the international terminal, with an estimated cost of R863 million. Proposed changes include additional apron stands, expanded commercial and lounge areas, and adjustments to immigration processing and bussing gates.

Overall, capacity development projects at the airport are currently estimated at about 10.143 billion ZAR.
Cape Town International Airport Acting Regional General Manager, Thabo Phateng said:These planned developments represent a significant step in strengthening Cape Town International Airport’s role as a critical economic gateway for the Western Cape and South Africa. By expanding capacity and enhancing operational resilience, we are positioning the airport to support sustained passenger growth, tourism expansion, trade facilitation, and long-term regional economic development.
The infrastructure programme is intended to support connectivity, tourism access and trade flows in the Western Cape. The investment is also expected to generate construction activity and supply-chain participation during development, alongside longer-term aviation sector growth.
The projects will be delivered in phases to maintain ongoing operations and limit disruption for airlines and passengers. Coordination with aviation partners and regulators is planned throughout the construction period.
