The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), the New York Power Authority (NYPA), and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) have installed eight dual-port electric charging stations at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

These chargers will power Delta Air Lines’ electric ground support equipment, such as baggage tugs and aeroplane tow tractors.

The installation of these chargers aligns with the Port Authority’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Specifically, it supports the 2022 mandate requiring operators at the Port Authority’s three major airports to transition to zero-emission ground support equipment.

Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said:

These ground support equipment chargers will support a cleaner, more sustainable future for all kinds of critical airside equipment and demonstrate our commitment to working with partners toward a greener future.

Ground service equipment accounts for 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions at JFK. The new chargers will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions at JFK by over 320 metric tonnes annually.

Amelia DeLuca, chief sustainability officer for Delta Air Lines said:

Investing in technology to reduce our climate impact within our ground operation is a vital part of Delta’s forward-thinking sustainability strategy. That is why Delta is committed to electrifying ground support equipment (GSE) and working with partners to create the infrastructure necessary to accelerate the aviation industry’s decarbonisation journey. We commend New York state for prioritising modern, sustainable airports and look forward to our continued partnership.

The chargers are funded by New York’s allocation from the Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Environmental Mitigation Trust.
