Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has provided the latest update on its ongoing Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project.

Following the Labor Day holiday weekend, CLT is commencing a new phase of the project.

This initiative aims to modernise and enhance the airport’s infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

Security Checkpoints

On 5 September, CLT will close its security Checkpoint C to facilitate the construction of the new Checkpoint 2.

As a result, TSA PreCheck services will be relocated to Checkpoint A, while standard screening will continue at Checkpoints 1 and E.

Upon completion of the TLE project, the airport will offer three new checkpoints—1, 2, and 3—featuring more lanes and state-of-the-art screening equipment designed to improve passenger flow and security efficiency.

Ticket Counters

New American Airlines ticket counters are also due to open as part of the TLE project.

In September, 11 of the 24 new counters will become operational, with the remaining counters expected to open by October.

These new facilities are located between Doors 2 and 3 in the centre of the Terminal Lobby, enhancing convenience for travellers.

Terminal Lobby Expansion

The Terminal Lobby Expansion is a critical component of CLT’s long-term strategy to meet the demands of its ever-growing passenger base.

Originally constructed in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million travellers annually, CLT has seen its traffic soar, with a record 53.4 million passengers passing through the airport in 2023. Of the 26.7 million passengers who departed from CLT last year, 8.3 million, or 31%, utilised the terminal lobby.

Scheduled for completion in 2025, the TLE project is set to transform the terminal into a state-of-the-art facility capable of serving millions more travellers each year. As CLT continues to evolve, these enhancements will ensure the airport remains a critical hub for both domestic and international travel.
