Construction has begun on a new air cargo freight hall in CargoCity Süd at Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

The opening of the new hall within the vicinity of Gate 31, which will be handled by the DHL Group and owned by Fraport AG, will expand the airport site by 55,000 square metres.

The handover and commissioning of the air freight hall to DHL Global Forwarding, the air and sea freight specialist of the DHL Group, is expected to take place in mid-2025

A ground breaking ceremony was held on site on 02 February, and was performed by Tobias Schmidt, CEO DHL Global Forwarding Europe and Anke Giesen, Board Member for Retail and Real Estate at Fraport AG.

Within the 55,000 square metre area, 24,500 square metres will consist of hall space, with 3,000 square metres of office and social spaces. Also planned are a series of freight yards, 25 truck parking spaces and 185 car parking spaces. Upon completion, the new hall will feature 54 dates and truck docks, with separate outdoor parking spaces for further trucks.

Anke Giesen, Board Member for Retail and Real Estate at Fraport AG, said:

The start of construction today on this high-quality air cargo hall also represents the continuous development of Europe’s leading air cargo hub at Frankfurt Airport.

The property meets the highest ecological and economic requirements for modern air freight handling and offers our future tenant DHL Global Forwarding optimal conditions for the further development of the air freight business. The realization of the complex project is also evidence of the exceptionally broad portfolio and proven expertise of Fraport real estate development.

The new hall is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
