Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) has reached another major milestone with the completion of a number of major construction works across the site.
The unveiling of the airport’s new terminal was attended by WSI CEO Simon Hickey will be joined by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King as well as senior executives from some of WSl’s key partners including Qantas Group, Singapore Airlines, Menzies Aviation and dnata Catering & Retail.

The terminal’s design, which was handled by COX Architecture and Zaha Hadid Architects and constructed by Multiplex and Woods Bagot, was, according to Mr. Hickey, inspired by the region’s natural beauty, with the overall project delivery handled by both WSI and Bechtel.
WSI, the country’s first greenfield international airport in over 50 years, features a streamlined departure process with new technology aimed at aiding passengers to move through the airport without delay, with both domestic and international gates all housed under one roof.
WSI CEO, Simon Hickey, said:Global architecture leaders Zaha Hadid Architects, based in London, and one of our nation's top firms COX Architecture were selected to develop the initial design concepts of WSI following a competition in 2019 that attracted more than 40 international and domestic proposals.
Fast forward six years and WSI is on the precipice of launching a seamless and stress-free airport experience unlike any other in Australia, giving our global city a 24-hour international gateway that will continue to create significant economic opportunities for all of Greater Sydney.
The airport’s terminal is equipped with a climate-responsive facade and more than 6,000 solar panels designed to provide both energy efficiency and renewable electricity. The design also allows for the collection and recycling of rainfall for use in airport operations such as bathrooms, irrigation and cooling towers.
With the airport’s major construction works now complete, the terminal is now ready to receive a full fit-out with a retail precinct and set of airline lounges. Commercial tenders and final contracts for the final fittings are now in progress, with the opening of the airport on track for late 2026.
The airport recently also completed work on its runway, as well as a number of other key airside facilities.
