Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has partnered with ThoroughTec Simulation to enhance its training capabilities for Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) and airside operations.

The agreement will see the installation of a suite of simulation technologies designed to support operator readiness and improve training outcomes.

As part of the initiative, DFW will deploy eight full-mission motion-base simulators covering a range of airside vehicles and tasks. The equipment will simulate ARFF scenarios, rapid intervention, snow removal, aircraft towing and general airside driving.

Each simulator will operate within a 3D digital model of DFW and its surrounding areas, allowing trainees to develop familiarity with the airport environment before engaging in live operations.

A virtual off-road driving track is also being developed, enabling training in more complex and less predictable conditions. The simulators aim to support operator safety, decision-making and coordination in both routine and emergency situations.

To manage the training system, DFW will adopt the WX Training Management System (TMS), a software platform created by ThoroughTec. Unlike traditional learning management systems, WX TMS is designed to handle a wide range of training formats, from classroom instruction to simulator-based scenarios. The platform is intended to help DFW track employee training progress, manage certifications, and support compliance through a centralised interface.

The ARFF training simulators, developed for Oshkosh Striker 6×6 and 4×4 vehicles, will allow firefighters to participate in joint exercises and respond to varied incident types under different conditions. The systems include a scenario editor, offering flexibility in adjusting fire types, aircraft models, time of day, and weather variables. The use of virtual environments also permits training with fire-suppression agents without the safety and environmental concerns associated with live exercises.

In parallel, snow-removal training will be delivered using simulators based on the Vammas PSB 5500 Plow Sweeper Blower. Like the ARFF tools, these simulators support multi-operator training, enabling coordinated snow-clearing practice year-round. Instructors will be able to tailor training scenarios to specific operational needs.

This deployment marks a significant step in DFW’s efforts to integrate simulation technology into daily operations. The airport’s training division expects the system to contribute to improved safety, operational efficiency and workforce development across multiple departments.
