Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has commenced an extensive transformation project, valued at nearly 9 billion USD.

The DFW Forward plan represents the airport’s most significant investment since its 1974 opening. It includes the transformation of terminals, expansion of facilities, and enhancement of connectivity and infrastructure.

Sean Donohue, Chief Executive Officer of DFW said:

After 50 years of growth, innovation and service to our community, a new era is now beginning at DFW. The incredible upgrades and expansions we have planned across the airport are going to reimagine the customer experience in many ways and provide the needed framework to support more historic growth in air travel to and from North Texas. As we grow closer to serving 100 million passengers each year, it’s time for DFW to enhance our remaining legacy terminal and imagine brand new ones. The work in front of us is exciting, but it is going to be complex, challenging and impactful as we continue to operate one of the world’s busiest airports.

Reconstruction of Terminal C

In the initial phase of this transformation plan, DFW has begun work on a complete overhaul of Terminal C. This is being carried out in partnership with American Airlines and other stakeholders.

The approximately 3 billion USD project will modernise the terminal, removing over 400 obstructive columns, installing dynamic glass windows, and raising the roof.

The upgraded terminal will also feature new facilities, including shops, restaurants, lounges, check-in areas, security checkpoints, and improved restrooms.

This first phase will include expansions to both Terminals C and A, adding 115,000 square feet and four gates to Terminal C, and 140,000 square feet and five gates to Terminal A. These expansions will increase capacity and offer additional amenities.

The Terminal C renovation will be conducted in phases, allowing flight operations to continue in other parts of the terminal during construction. Completion of the terminal is anticipated by 2030.

Alongside the redevelopment of Terminal C, the south parking garage will be rebuilt to accommodate increased demand.

The design-build team for the Terminal C project includes Austin Commercial, Azteca Enterprises, Alpha & Omega, HOK, and Muller & Muller, Ltd.

DFW Forward

The DFW Forward transformation programme also includes several other significant projects.

Notably, the airport’s sixth terminal, Terminal F, will be constructed, featuring 15 gates, a Skylink station, modernised systems, and expanded concessions.

In addition, several other major projects are also underway at the airport:

Electric Central Utility Plant (eCUP): This new facility will heat and cool DFW’s terminals using electricity from 100% renewable resources.

East-West Connector Roadway: A new thoroughfare on the airport’s southside, connecting Rental Car Drive to State Highway 360, is under construction following extensive planning.

Southwest End-Around Taxiway Project: A multi-phase construction project developing DFW’s third end-around taxiway to improve aircraft movement safety and efficiency.

Fire Station Modernisation Project: Two new fire stations are being built in central airfield locations to enhance resiliency, minimise response time, and improve efficiency.

19th Street Cargo Redevelopment: To meet increasing cargo demand, new facilities will nearly double cargo aircraft parking capacity, adding seven new positions designed for some of the world’s largest aircraft.
