The UK Government has advised that, starting on 25 February 2026, visitors from 85 different nationalities who do not need a visa will not be allowed entry to the UK without an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Nationalities affected by the ‘No Permission, No Travel’ rule implementation, which will enforce digital permission for all those visiting through either an ETA or eVisa, will include the United States, Canada and France.

Travellers who do not require a visa will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation in order to enter the UK

First launched in October 2023; the ETA has thus far seen over 13.3 million visitors successfully apply for the pass, with the Authorisation now forming a fundamental part of travel for those visiting the UK.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp, said:

ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and gives us a fuller picture of immigration.

ETAs are also better for travellers. Digitising the immigration system ensures the millions of people we welcome to the UK every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience.

During its initial rollout; the ETA was not strictly enforced in order to give visitors a chance to adjust to the new requirement – a precaution also taken in other countries with similar systems, including the United States and Canada.

An ETA can be applied for via the official UK ETA app, and costs 16 GBP. A decision can typically take minutes, however guidelines suggest allowing 3 working days for full approval.

British and Irish citizens, including those with dual citizenship, are exempt from needing an ETA, though the UK Government urges dual citizens to make sure they are in possession of a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement to avoid problems like being denied boarding when travelling to the UK from 25 February 2026.
