Edinburgh Airport (EDI) has announced the introduction of Deep Turnaround, an AI solution developed by Aviation Solutions, subsidiary of the Schiphol Group.
The system aims to streamline the aircraft turnaround process, reduce delays, and improve efficiency, helping the airport address capacity challenges while enhancing the passenger experience.
Deep Turnaround employs artificial intelligence, machine learning, and apron-mounted cameras to track and time over 30 specific ground-handling processes. By automatically detecting key events such as the start and end of turnaround activities, the system provides real-time insights and allows delays to be predicted up to 40 minutes in advance. This enables operational teams to make proactive decisions, optimising workflows and minimising disruptions.
Peter Barnes, Head of Business Transformation at Edinburgh Airport said:Innovation is a key part of our approach at Edinburgh Airport, and using AI to help improve our turnaround times is something we are very excited about. Deep Turnaround’s systems and use of technology have the potential to make our operations even more efficient, and we look forward to collaborating with our colleagues to bring this to fruition.
This system is expected to enhance coordination among airlines, ground handlers, and airport staff by offering accurate data and shared insights. In turn, it will deliver smoother operations, reducing the likelihood of bottlenecks or inefficiencies during busy periods.
Caroline Massart, Director of Aviation Solutions, said:The right insights provided by data help make airport operations more predictable. We're collaborating with multiple airports on Deep Turnaround, and we’re very proud and excited to add Edinburgh to our community of users.
Deep Turnaround is being phased in at Edinburgh Airport and is expected to be operational by Q1 2025. This initiative forms part of the airport’s broader digital strategy to enhance operational efficiency and modernise its processes.
