Ethiopian Airlines has opened a new airport at Yabello in southern Oromia and has commenced passenger flights to and from the facility.
The project, which cost more than 1 billion ETB (7.1 million USD), lies 11 kilometres from Yabello town in the Borena Zone. It includes a new airfield, access roads, a temporary terminal and supporting infrastructure.

At the opening ceremony, attended by government officials, airline executives and local representatives, Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Mesfin Tasew said the airport would improve regional connectivity and provide new opportunities for communities in the area.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew said:The completion of the Yabello Airport project demonstrates Ethiopian Airline’s commitment to advancing aviation infrastructure that transforms lives and connect communities across Ethiopia. This is a transformative moment for the local community and the entire region, and as the flag carrier of Ethiopia, we are proud to have made this moment a reality.
The airline expects the new airport to support trade, tourism and investment in the south of Oromia, while also improving links between the region and the rest of Ethiopia.
Yabello is one of several regional airport projects Ethiopian Airlines has been developing as part of its wider role in expanding the country’s aviation network.
Ethiopian Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance and operates flights to more than 160 destinations worldwide. The airline has set out a long-term growth plan, “Vision 2035,” and also partners with carriers in Togo, Malawi, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
