The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced over 332 million USD for 171 grants across 32 different states to modernise airports throughout the country.
Announced as part of the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) programme, the funding will be provided to aid in airport planning, development, terminal expansions, sustainability, runway safety enhancements, noise compatibility projects and terminal expansions.
To date, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has included 25 billion USD in total for airport and air traffic control infrastructure works over the course of five years.
Airports set to receive funding include Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona, which will receive roughly 84 million USD to construct a new 2,100ft Taxiway U, Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport in Alaska, which will receive just under 19 million USD for the expansion of its terminal and Tallahassee International Airport in Florida, which will receive roughly 6.7 million USD for the construction of two new Taxiways, as well as associated lighting to bring the airport in line with current FAA design and safety standards.
The FAA has also announced that several previously funded projects are nearing completion, including Jonesboro Municipal Airport in Arkansas’ newly strengthened Raunway 5/23 and Madisonville Regional Airport in Kentucky’s enhanced safe airfield operations through the upgrade of its Runway 5/23 and Taxiway A lighting systems.
