The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced air traffic restrictions within the area over the Potomac River around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
The restriction zones, which include Memorial Bridge to South Capitol Street Bridge (Tidal Basin excluded), Haines Point to Wilson Bridge and areas over the top of DCA, have been introduced following the recent collision between a US Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet.
The restriction restricts entry for any helicopters, with the exemption of lifesaving medical support, active law enforcement, active air defence or presidential transport helicopter missions.
Restrictions are set to remain in place whilst the NTSB completes its preliminary investigation of the inciting incident, which will then be reviewed based on the report given.
U.S. Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, said:Today’s decision will immediately help secure the airspace near Reagan Airport, ensuring the safety of airplane and helicopter traffic.
This is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding our nation’s skies and upholding the highest standards of air travel safety. We will continue to support President Trump’s directive to achieve uncompromised aviation safety. The American people deserve full confidence in our aviation system and today’s action is a significant step towards restoring that trust.
