Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has celebrated the ‘topping out’ of its Terminal 4 Modernization Program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Earlier this week, crews lifted and placed the final steel beam onto the frame of the terminal’s main concourse, which connects with gates at its southern concourse.

With topping out now complete, the structure has now been deemed safe and ready for crews to install interior finishes, such as walls and windows, as well as mechanical equipment like heat and air conditioning.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said:

This is another important step in LAX's multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program which is creating a better travel experience for Angelenos and visitors alike.

I want to recognise the leadership of CEO John Ackerman and the Board of Airport Commissioners for making these critical investments to develop the world-class airport that Los Angeles deserves, especially as we prepare to welcome the world with the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

LAX’s Terminal 4 Modernization Program first began with enabling works in 2018, and includes the implementation of two major projects: The Terminal 4.5 Vertical Core, which integrates the entrance of the terminal with a direct connection between Terminals 4 and 5 and SkyLink (which was completed in 2022); and the modernisation of Terminal 4 itself, which includes a new terminal entrance, a new south concourse, and a refurbishment of the corridor connecting these facilities.
