Flughafen Zürich AG (ZRH) has put its first electrically powered waste collection vehicle into operation, taking another step toward its goal of a diesel-free fleet by 2040.

ZRH plans to introduce a further two electric vehicles into active operation in January 2025, with the three new vehicles set to replace current waste collection units in use on site.

According to current plans, there will be more than 330 electric vehicles in operation at the airport by 2040

The airport currently utilises at least 80 zero-emission passenger delivery vans as part of its daily operations, and has made substantial investments in the expansion of its on-site charging infrastructure in order to accommodate any future electrification efforts.

Emanuel Fleuti, Head of Sustainability and Environment at Flughafen Zürich AG, said:

Our decarbonisation strategy ensures that the environmental impact of flight operations is further reduced and that we remain efficient.

Investments in alternative drive systems and charging infrastructure are part of our goal of reducing the company's own carbon emissions to net zero by 2040.
