Plans have been announced for the construction of a new air cargo warehouse for global air and sea freight provider Kühne+Nagel at Frankfurt Airport.

The warehouse, which is set to be completed by 2028, will be situated in the Airport’s CargoCity South area, marking a milestone in the area’s overall development.

Fraport will oversee all construction of the new warehouse, which will remain part of its building inventory. Kühne+Nagel has been present at the FRA global cargo hub for over 20 years, and the new warehouse will aim to further strengthen its presence at the location.

Martin Schäfer, SVP Air Logistics Germany at Kühne+Nagel, said:

Frankfurt is a key global gateway in the Kuehne+Nagel air logistics network. As supply chains become more dynamic, our new cargo facility provides the infrastructure, capacity, and connectivity needed to support our growth ambitions and keep goods moving.

This enables us to better serve customers in fast-growing sectors like healthcare, semiconductors, high tech, and cloud infrastructure.

Forming part of FRA’s Air Cargo Area 2, the new warehouse will measure approximately 16,900 square metres. It will be situated beside access gate Tor 31, and will feature 7,600 square metres of warehouse space, with an additional 1,100 square metres of offices and social areas.

The building will be equipped with 16 gates and truck docks, and will provide space for both driving and manoeuvring. It has also been conceptualised to adhere to environmental criteria, with a large photovoltaic panel system on the roof which will feed green electricity directly into the airport’s grid.

Julia Kranenberg, Executive Board member and Chief Retail and Real Estate Officer (CRO) at Fraport AG, said:

We are delighted that Kühne+Nagel has decided to expand their presence here at Frankfurt Airport. The new warehouse will be a modern, efficient air cargo facility, offering this leading logistics company exceptional opportunities for growth and expansion at Europe’s foremost cargo hub.

Construction of the facility forms a key component of Fraport’s strategy to participate in the overall growth of the air cargo market, which has thus far seen the company develop its CargoHub masterplan, which in turn is hoped to strengthen the FRA cargo location over the coming years.

The masterplan includes three initiatives: space optimisation, space development and digitalisation & process innovation, all of which are hoped to aid Fraport to scale its cargo hub to meet growing demand.
