Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has opened the completed International Connections Facility (ICF), marking the final phase of the project and introducing a renovated international arrivals area.

The redevelopment incorporates Mi’kmaq art and cultural elements and follows the opening of the facility’s upper level last year. It was designed to improve the international arrivals process while reflecting the cultural heritage of Nova Scotia.

Key installations include a 26-foot floor centrepiece designed by Stephen Francis of Eskasoni, featuring an eight-pointed star symbol associated with the Mi’kmaq districts and the sun. The space also includes artwork by Mi’kmaq artist Alan Syliboy of Millbrook, displayed across six pillars, along with a living plant wall and 14 drums from his Daily Drum collection.

Dean Bouchard, Vice President, Airport Planning and Development at HIAA said:

The construction of the new ICF enabled us to reimagine the international arrivals experience. As a key opportunity to demonstrate the culture and heritage of Nova Scotia to travellers arriving here, we knew it was important to create a strong sense of place that pays tribute to the very first peoples of these lands.

The ICF is intended to support growth in passenger traffic and cargo handling, while enabling more efficient international-to-domestic connections. The facility also supports border processing operations in coordination with the Canada Border Services Agency.

HIAA stated that the new facility forms part of its wider infrastructure investment programme aimed at improving connectivity and operational efficiency at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

The project was funded through contributions from Transport Canada, which provided 8.3 million CAD, and the Government of Nova Scotia, which contributed 3 million CAD. HIAA invested more than 6.5 million CAD.

The Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons said:

Our government is proud to support projects that strengthen Canada’s supply chains and improve connectivity for travellers and businesses alike. The new International Connections Facility at Halifax Stanfield is a perfect example of how strategic investments can enhance efficiency, and position Canada as a global gateway. These improvements will help move people and goods faster and more reliably, creating economic opportunities for communities across Atlantic Canada and beyond.
