Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has published a list of nine airlines that have been recognised at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as part of the LAX Fly Quieter Program.
The first programme of its kind for a commercial US airport, it seeks to recognise steps taken by airlines to reduce aircraft noise through a mix of both voluntary operational and technical measures, as well as community engagement.

In order to rate the airlines, each is scored against five different elements, including aircraft noise levels as measured by monitors in residential communities, noise level ratings of an airline’s fleet of aircraft at LAX as certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the number of early turns over communities during take-off, the number of non-conforming easterly departures during nighttime hours between 00:00 and 6:30 a.m. and compliance with the LAX nighttime maintenance engine run-up restriction, which is in place between 23:00 and 06:00.
Each airline was recognised within three categories based on the average number of daily operations at LAX.
Category 1 (100 or more average daily operations):
Gold – United Airlines
Silver – American Airlines
Bronze – Southwest Airlines
Category 2 (5-99 average daily operations):
Gold – Volaris
Silver – Frontier Airlines
Bronze – Spirit Airlines
Category 3 (Four or fewer average daily operations):
Gold – Breeze Airways
Silver – ITA Airways
Bronze – Fiji Airways
Crystal Lee, Deputy Executive Director for Sustainability, Energy, Environmental and Development Services, Los Angeles World Airports, said:What makes the LAX Fly Quieter Program unique is our emphasis on collaboration because it allows LAWA, along with our surrounding communities and airline partners, to continue learning about and recognizing opportunities to minimize aircraft noise impacts.
Making the choice to fly quieter supports our shared commitment to safe, efficient and sustainable operations. LAWA congratulates the 2024 winners for their commendable efforts.
The programme was first started in January 2020, and began life as an education and recognition programme to incentivise efforts by airlines to fly as quietly as possible at LAX.
