Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has announced the closure of Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) Terminal 5 in preparation for its complete demolition.
Airlines operating out of the terminal have now begun relocating in phases, with full closure going into effect on Tuesday 28 October.

The terminal is scheduled to reopen shortly before the start of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic games.
LAX’s newly-completed Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC South) will aid in the continued operations of flights currently scheduled to use Terminal 5. Other existing terminals will also provide space for operations.
Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer, Los Angeles World Airports, said:As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience.
Our goal is to minimize disruption during this transition, and we are working closely with our airline partners to ensure continued operations and smooth travel for our passengers.
MSC South was opened to the public yesterday (21 October) and has added more than 150,000 square feet to LAX’s footprint. The project was delivered both on time and budget, and utilised the Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR) technique.
Whilst there is no Terminal 5 building; check-in and ticketing activities will see JetBlue operate from Terminal 1, Spirit Airlines operate out of Terminal 2 (from 22 October) and American Airlines operate out of Terminal 4 (from 28 October).
