Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has officially begun work on the improvement of roadways surrounding LAX with the removal of the airport’s signature sign at its gateway.

The removal of the letters will allow for construction to begin on the reconfiguration and upgrade of the roadways, which aims to provide smoother and more efficient access to the airport by reducing traffic congestion.

Work will include the separation of airport-bound vehicles from local traffic along Sepulveda Boulevard, which is expected to improve the flow of vehicles within and around the airport.

Additionally, the new roadways will include the addition of new pedestrian enhancements, improved signage and more direct access to LAX economy parking.

Michael Christensen, Chief Airport Development Officer, Los Angeles World Airports, said:

While the LAX sign will be taking a break from the spotlight, our teams and contracting partners will be hard at work on roadway improvements that will provide long-term benefits to employees, travellers and our surrounding communities, creating a world-class airport experience for years to come.

The roadways improvement work forms part of LAX’s Airfield & Terminal Modernization Program (ATMP), which seeks to enhance passenger experience, community connectivity, airfield safety and business opportunities.

Work is expected to be completed by 2030, and despite their current removal; the LAX letters will be relocated shortly to ensure compatibility with the new road designs.
