Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has opened two new road connections designed to improve access to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The projects form part of the airport’s Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP).

The first connects 98th Street into a continuous 1.5-mile east–west route between La Cienega Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard. The road, which runs parallel to Century Boulevard, now has new intersections at Bellanca Avenue, Aviation Boulevard and Concourse Way. Pavements and landscaping have been added along the route.

The work was carried out with support from several city, county and state agencies, including the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Bureau of Engineering, Department of Water and Power, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Caltrans. Skanska Civil USA was the main contractor for the extension.

Coordination with LA Metro allowed the new 98th Street alignment to pass under a grade-separated rail bridge serving the K and C light rail lines, enabling road and rail traffic to operate without conflict.

The second project extends Jetway Boulevard. The north–south route now runs from Century Boulevard to Westchester Parkway, linking with the LAX Economy Parking facility and providing additional intersections at 96th Street and 98th Street. The road includes two traffic lanes and a cycle lane in each direction, as well as stormwater infrastructure.

Construction of Jetway Boulevard began in 2019, with the first section completed in 2021 to connect Westchester Parkway to the LAX Economy Parking entrance. The remaining sections were built by LINXS, with contributions from multiple contractors including Skanska, Swinerton and Comet Electric.

Jake Adams, Deputy Executive Director for the Landside Access Modernization Program, Los Angeles World Airports said:

Roadway improvements are a significant part of our efforts to improve mobility and access to LAX and its facilities, and the openings of 98th Street and Jetway Boulevard are the latest examples of those efforts.

Both projects were delivered as part of LAMP, which also includes the LAX Automated People Mover and other access improvements. LAWA said the road connections are intended to reduce congestion and provide alternative routes for traffic entering and leaving the airport.
