Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has reached a significant milestone in the development of its Automated People Mover (APM) system. For the first time, train cars are being tested within the Central Terminal Area (CTA).
The APM train vehicles recently crossed over Sepulveda and Century Boulevards onto the elevated guideway within the CTA.
These tests, conducted by LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS), will verify vehicle clearance across the track and through the three APM stations in the terminal area.
In the initial phase, testing will take place with a single pair of APM vehicles moving at minimal speeds to confirm proper clearance.
Speeds will then increase gradually throughout the testing period, which is set to continue through the end of 2025.
Each test is designed to lay the groundwork for the broader commissioning process, ensuring a safe and reliable system upon its launch in 2026.
John Ackerman, CEO, Los Angeles World Airports said:This testing milestone brings us one step closer to delivering a more efficient travel experience for our employees and guests at LAX. The train has been the airport's missing link to our great city, and it will ensure that LAX welcomes Angelenos and visitors from across the globe in a truly world-class way.
The APM system will connect passengers to key airport facilities, including the upcoming Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility, LAX Economy Parking, and regional transit systems.
Earlier this year, test runs began between the ConRAC facility and the Economy Parking garage station. This latest phase now brings the project closer to completion and integrates the CTA into the APM’s growing operational framework.
