London City Airport (LCY) has submitted an application to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to enable the operation of the Airbus A320neo at the airport.
If approved, this would mark a significant step in the airport’s efforts to adopt cleaner, quieter aircraft and support sustainable growth.
The proposed changes would allow London City to achieve its permitted passenger capacity with fewer flight movements, aligning with its commitment to operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
By accommodating the A320neo, the airport aims to stimulate economic growth, encourage airlines to modernise their fleets, and open new route possibilities for passengers.
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, said:The potential introduction of the A320neo aircraft at London City Airport is incredibly exciting. It would broaden the range of leisure destinations for our passengers, enable growth without increasing the number of flight movements, deliver much needed economic growth and accelerate refleeting to cleaner, quieter, new generation aircraft.
The A320neo, known for its fuel efficiency and quieter operation, can carry over 180 passengers and reach destinations over 1,000 kilometres away, covering much of mainland Europe.
In August 2024, the UK Government approved plans to raise London City’s annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to 9 million by 2031 without increasing the number of permitted flights or requiring new infrastructure. The introduction of the A320neo is seen as a cornerstone of the airport’s strategy to expand its leisure travel offerings within these constraints.
The application to the CAA specifically seeks approval for a new flight procedure (RNP AR), which would adjust the approach angle for the A320neo at both runway ends. The airport’s current approach angle limits the types of aircraft that can operate, requiring certification for steep approaches. The new procedure would enable the A320neo to land at LCY, enhancing fleet flexibility for airlines.
