London Gatwick Airport (LGW) has announced a strategic partnership with Great Western Railway (GWR) to enhance the North Downs Line, linking the airport to Surrey, Reading, and the Thames Valley.
The announcement was made at the annual London Gatwick Transport Forum. It aligns with the airport’s goal to boost public transport use and achieve 60% zero and ultra-low emission journeys by 2030.
Highlights of the Partnership include:
Station and Service Improvements: London Gatwick and GWR will collaborate to develop plans for station upgrades and improved service offerings along the North Downs Line.
Passenger Benefits: The partnership seeks to enhance travel experiences, making it easier for passengers and local communities to access the line.
Collaborative Marketing and Development: Joint marketing initiatives and engagement with the rail industry and local stakeholders will drive the line’s future growth.
This partnership reflects the airport’s broader ambitions to strengthen its position as a multi-modal transport hub, connecting aviation with rail, coach travel, local buses, and cycling networks.
Specifically, as part of its Decade of Change sustainability strategy, London Gatwick aims to increase public transport and zero-emission travel.
Jonathan Pollard, Chief Commercial Officer, London Gatwick said:The Great Western Railway service to Reading is already a vital service for London Gatwick’s passengers and colleagues, not to mention the local communities along the North Downs Line. This partnership provides the framework for an even more ambitious and collaborative approach to developing air to rail services at London Gatwick and we are delighted to continue this journey with the GWR team.
As we look to grow through our Northern Runway Project it is imperative we continue improving our transport options for passengers and local communities.
