London Luton Airport (LTN) has launched a quirky but impactful summer initiative to help reduce plastic waste generated by holidaymakers: the LLA Lilo Exchange.

The scheme allows passengers to drop off and collect free, pre-loved inflatables, such as lilos and flamingo rings, helping reduce the estimated 54.5 million discarded inflatables left behind on holidays each year.

The initiative follows research commissioned by the airport, which found that while 41% of families consider inflatables a holiday essential, over a third (36%) admit to using them just once before discarding them. Factors like limited luggage space, punctures, and the hassle of deflation drive this wasteful trend.

Passengers flying from London Luton can now grab a free, second-hand float from a dedicated selection available at the airport. Returning travellers can donate used inflatables in exchange for Fast Track security passes for their next trip.

Clare Armstrong, Head of Guest Experience at London Luton Airport, said:

We’re thrilled to launch London Luton Airport’s ‘LLA Lilo Exchange’ this summer - a fun and environmentally responsible way to highlight our simple and friendly passenger experience. As we all know, inflatables are one of the most loved holiday staples to travel with and, contrary to the belief of nearly half (45%) of passengers, deflated inflatables are allowed through airport security. Our Lilo Exchange aims to provide a fun way to encourage people to travel more responsibly by bringing back unwanted inflatables, so that other holidaymakers jetting off from LLA can do the same.

The Lilo Exchange is part of Luton’s wider ‘LLA Resort’ summer campaign, which comes as the airport prepares to welcome an estimated 2.5 million travellers this summer.
