Long Beach Airport in Southern California has cut the ribbon on its new 16,700-square-foot ticketing lobby and checked baggage inspection system (CBIS) facility.
The projects are part of Long Beach Airport’s major 110 million USD Phase II – Terminal Area Improvement Program to enhance the airport’s pre-security facilities. The 26 million USD ticketing lobby was designed by Corgan and constructed by Swinerton to complement the adjacent historic terminal and provide passengers with easy access, sustainable facilities, and a welcoming feel.
Mayor Robert Garcia said:Long Beach already has one of the best airports anywhere, and we’re continuing to invest and make it even more accessible, innovative and passenger-friendly. The new ticketing terminal is a great addition that will benefit travellers to our airport and city.
The new ticketing lobby features common use ticket counters and self-service kiosks for greater flexibility, as well as ample square footage for improved passenger circulation, and improved bag checking and screening efficiency. The facility has also been designed with optimised energy performance, high-efficiency LED lighting, and reduced indoor and outdoor water usage.
The ticketing lobby will officially open on Wednesday 4 May following a public open house on 30 April.
Alongside this opening, a state-of-the-art 25.5 million USD CBIS operation connected to the ticketing lobby, will also commence operations to allow the Transportation and Security Administration at Long Beach Airport to screen checked bags more efficiently.
Airport Director Cynthia Guidry said:The bold and beautifully designed Ticketing Lobby and behind-the-scenes CBIS will streamline the passenger experience from curb to gate and build upon our reputation as one of the coolest, easiest airports to navigate in the country.
Completion of the new ticketing lobby and the CBIS facility represent the first two components of the Phase II – Terminal Area Improvement Program. A consolidated baggage claim facility is also currently under construction and is scheduled to open in late 2022.
The Phase I – Terminal Area Improvement Program, which involved a 100 million USD investment in priority projects was completed in 2012.
