Bangor International Airport (BGR) currently remains closed following a fatal aircraft accident that occurred shortly after take-off on Sunday night. Meanwhile, investigators are commencing a comprehensive inquiry into the cause of the crash.

Emergency services were called to the airport at around 7.45 pm on Sunday after a single aircraft was reported to have crashed while departing Bangor International Airport. The aircraft has been identified as a Bombardier CL600 business jet. According to the flight manifest, six people were on board at the time of the accident.

Authorities have confirmed that the aircraft crashed shortly after departure and was involved in a post-crash fire. Multiple emergency crews responded to the scene. No one was taken to hospital, and officials have stated that all six occupants are presumed to have died. The identities of those on board have not yet been released, pending formal identification and notification of families.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash, which occurred on 25 January. A team of NTSB investigators are documenting the crash location and examining the wreckage. The aircraft will then be recovered to a secure facility for further analysis.

The NTSB has stated that its investigation will focus on three primary areas: the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment. As part of this process, investigators will collect flight track data, air traffic control recordings, aircraft maintenance records, and information relating to weather, lighting conditions and forecasts at the time of the accident. They will also review the pilot’s licence, ratings and recent flight experience, as well as a 72-hour background to identify any factors that may have affected the safe operation of the flight.

In addition, witness statements will be gathered, along with electronic devices that could contain relevant data. Investigators will also review any available surveillance footage, including recordings from nearby doorbell cameras. Members of the public who witnessed the accident or have video or other information that may assist the investigation are being asked to contact the NTSB directly by email.

The Federal Aviation Administration remains on site, and an Emergency Operations Centre continues to operate. The airport closure has resulted in multiple flight cancellations and diversions, and passengers are being advised to contact their airlines for the latest travel information.
