Miami International Airport (MIA) has announced upgrades to one of its busiest passenger checkpoints with a suite of new screening technology boasting speed increases of up to 30% over the traditional checkpoint lane.
Installed in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA); MIA’s new TSA Checkpoint 2 at Concourse D now features four Analogic eXpress passenger screening lanes, each of which has been equipped with 3D computed tomography (CT) explosive detection scanners, as well as fully automated bin return conveyance systems capable of screening 500 bins per hour.

MIA’s new checkpoint made its official debut on 1 November after a temporary closure in August in which the 5.3 million USD renovation was installed.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, said:The new Checkpoint 2 is the latest way that we’re modernising the airport experience for the millions of residents and visitors who travel through MIA every year. I am especially proud that many of our passengers departing from our busiest concourse will have an even smoother screening process starting this month, thanks to this enhanced checkpoint, which is the first of more to come.
The project forms part of MIA’s 9 billion USD Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) Plan, which aims to renovate the airport over the course of the next 5 to 10 years.
Currently, more than 200 projects make up the plan, with other major renovation and expansion projects including the modernisation and preventative maintenance of over 600 elevators, escalators, and moving walkways; the creation of a new 2,240-space Ibis garage opening this December; the development of the new Concourse K expansion scheduled to open in 2029; and the 745 million USD Central Terminal redevelopment project, which will modernise MIA’s oldest terminal area by 2031.
