Miami-Dade County officials have marked the beginning of construction on Concourse K, a significant infrastructure development at Miami International Airport (MIA).
The groundbreaking ceremony, led by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, took place with representatives from the County Commission, airport leadership, and project partners in attendance.

The expansion will add 300,000 square feet to MIA’s terminal footprint. Concourse K is designed to accommodate six new passenger gates, providing space for both domestic and international flights.
The concourse will include a range of new amenities, including a passenger lounge and post-security retail and dining areas. Scheduled for completion in 2029, it is the first terminal expansion at the airport since 2012.

This project is part of MIA’s broader 9 billion USD capital improvement programme, aimed at modernising facilities and preparing for projected growth in passenger and cargo volumes. Concourse K will also include a two-level ground support equipment maintenance facility, an updated baggage handling system, and improvements to airfield infrastructure.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said:Today’s groundbreaking was a giant step in MIA’s $9 billion modernization plan, which will completely transform our community’s gateway to the world over the next six years. As the first major terminal expansion at MIA in nearly 20 years, Concourse K marks a historic milestone in our efforts to create a more modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly airport. With this expansion, the new Ibis Garage opening this winter, a total makeover of Central Terminal, and other customer service enhancements coming soon to every touchpoint in the passenger journey, the travel experience at MIA is being elevated to new heights—one improvement at a time.
Sustainability features are a key aspect of the project. The facility is being built to meet LEED Silver certification standards and will also receive Envision verification, reflecting commitments to environmentally responsible design and construction practices.
The total cost of the expansion is estimated at 600.6 million USD. Of this, 91.2 million USD comes from Federal Aviation Administration grants, and 30.1 million USD is provided by the Florida Department of Transportation. The remainder will be financed through airport revenue bonds, supported by airline fees and income from concessions.
The design and construction work is being delivered by the Lemartec-NV2A Joint Venture. Company representatives noted the importance of the project as part of MIA’s long-term strategy to meet rising demand and improve passenger experience.
Lemartec-NV2A Joint Venture said:Breaking ground on Concourse K is more than the start of construction—it’s the continuation of a decades-long partnership at MIA and a bold investment in Miami-Dade’s future. The Lemartec-NV2A Joint Venture is proud to help deliver a world-class facility that meets the demands of tomorrow with smart, sustainable infrastructure and an exceptional passenger experience at its core.
Concourse K is one of several ongoing or planned developments under MIA’s Future-Ready Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) Plan. Other projects include the Ibis Garage, a renovation of the Central Terminal, the expansion of Gate D60, and upgrades to over 200 pieces of vertical transportation equipment across the airport. Collectively, these efforts aim to enable MIA to handle up to 77 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2040.
