Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has completed an extensive interior renovation of Terminal 1, covering six concourses and approximately 75 Delta Air Lines gate areas.

The project was delivered through the Airport Modernisation Program, a 242 million USD initiative jointly managed by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta.

The programme aimed to create a consistent design across most of Terminal 1’s post-security areas. Delta operates its second largest hub at MSP and accounts for around 70% of the airport’s passenger traffic.

Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC said:

In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that elevates the passenger experience — from the checkpoints to the gate areas. Delta has been a tremendous partner helping to deliver more modern spaces that enhance MSP’s award-winning customer service.

Renovations began in the autumn of 2023. Key elements included new terrazzo and carpet flooring, updated wall finishes, energy-efficient LED lighting, and upgraded building systems housed within new metal-panel ceilings.

Delta gate areas were refurbished with new seating, carpeting, counters and signage. Dynamic gate signs were installed along concourse walkways to provide passengers with flight and destination information more efficiently.

Delta Vice President of Airport Operations, Jeannine Ashworth said:

Minneapolis-St. Paul is a vital hub for Delta, enabling our customers to connect to hundreds of destinations across the globe. We are so grateful for our partnership with the MAC on the Airport Modernization Program, which has allowed us to truly elevate the customer experience with modern facilities and amenities that will benefit all of our customers travelling through MSP.

The Terminal 1 interior work ran concurrently with the final stages of a separate ten-year programme to upgrade pre-security areas, including checkpoints, ticketing and baggage claim. MSP’s Operational Improvements Program concluded earlier in 2025.

The MAC invested 182.5 million USD in the Airport Modernisation Program, while Delta contributed 60 million USD.

Post-security improvements include:

  • Dynamic flight information screens at each gate along concourse walkways
  • Refurbishment of 75 Delta gate areas
  • New gate seating with integrated power outlets
  • Brighter, energy-efficient LED lighting in concourses and gate areas
  • Terrazzo flooring in concourses C, D and G; new carpeting in concourses A, B and F
  • Updated wall finishes, including granite in public corridors and tile in Delta gate areas
  • Metal-panel ceilings throughout most concourses
  • New structural column covers
  • Refreshed gate carpeting consistent with other Delta hub airports
  • Updated gate information display screens
  • Refreshed Delta branding across all gate areas

The renovation represents a substantial update to Terminal 1’s post-security environment, enhancing passenger convenience and operational efficiency while aligning with broader improvements across MSP.

Bridget Rief, MAC vice president of planning and development said:

It’s been an intense decade of projects and improvements to transform this terminal into a modern facility. In all, these projects enabled us to accommodate the future growth of passenger volume, improve systems and operations, and deliver bright and welcoming spaces for our millions of annual travellers and visitors.
