This Friday will see the opening of San Diego International Airport’s (SAN) new on-airport roadway, which will give drivers the option for faster direct access to the airport.
The new three-lane roadway has been designed with no intersections or traffic lights, and will provide an uninterrupted, high-capacity route directly to SAN’s Terminals 1 and 2.

The entrance to the new roadway is located on North Harbor Drive, west of the intersection with West Laurel Street.
Vehicles travelling toward the airport via West Laurel Street must bear to the right in order to merge directly with the new on-airport roadway, with vehicles bearing right to access the roadway no longer having an option to merge onto North Harbor Drive.
In order to access North Harbor Drive, drivers must stay to the left along West Laurel Street before turning right at the intersection with North Harbor Drive.
Directional signs have been placed along both North Harbor Drive and West Laurel Street to direct drivers toward the new entrance.
Kimberly Becker, CEO and President of San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said:We are thrilled to open this new entrance roadway to the airport.
The on-airport roadway is a component of our new Terminal 1 redevelopment project, with the first phase opening this September. This is a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and making travel to SAN more efficient.
The new roadway is hoped to divert some 45,000 vehicles from North Harbor Drive per day, which is expected to improve traffic flow for both airport and local commuters.
