The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) has announced the completion of construction on its new 63.4 million USD taxiway at Willow Run Airport (YIP).

Funded in part by 54.6 million USD in grants from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP); the taxiway programme was carried out to improve airport safety, operational efficiency and capacity enhancements.

Whilst federal grants covered nearly 90% of the eligible costs, the remaining 8.7 million USD of project funding was secured through State of Michigan grants.

Stretching over 7,500ft; the new taxiway runs parallel to the airport’s main runway. The taxiway pavement was installed in three phases, with the first beginning in spring 2023 and being completed in October 2025.

The taxiway’s construction forms part of a wider movement to improve design and operational efficiency at YIP, with the Airport Authority also having utilised a portion of AIP funding for the relocation of FAA equipment, a project that spanned eight months and ended in January 2025.

Willow Run Airport Director Michael Fawaz, said:

With this work complete, Willow Run is even better positioned to support our cargo partners and future development.

We thank our state and federal officials for their ongoing commitment to improving Willow Run.
