Construction is set to begin on one of New Zealand’s largest solar farms at Christchurch Airport thanks to investment from Contact Energy and Lightsource bp.

The Kōwhai Park solar farm will feature around 300,000 panels spanning 230 hectares to help meet the growing demand for renewable energy.

This development will thus contribute to Christchurch Airport’s vision of becoming a clean energy hub.

Christchurch Airport Renewable Energy Park
The park is part of the airport’s plan to become climate positive over the coming decade.
Justin Watson, Christchurch Airport Chief Executive, said:

Kōwhai Park highlights our commitment to support decarbonisation through creating a clean energy hub that will fuel the region’s economic prosperity.

It’s great to see our partners Contact Energy and Lightsource bp ready to develop Stage 1 of Kōwhai Park. These two organisations have all the expertise to make this a project that Canterbury can be proud of and we’re grateful to have them onboard.

Lightsource bp and Contact Energy are expected to begin construction over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Christchurch Airport states that it is also focused on developing additional renewable energy projects to enhance sustainability.
