San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) has completed a sustainable ceiling replacement project at Terminal 2.

The airport has successfully recycled 48,000 pounds of waste material during the project, replacing the old ceiling with new tiles made from environmentally friendly recycled materials.

The project improves the aesthetic appeal, air quality, and functionality of the terminal while also contributing to OAK’s overall sustainability goals

The project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the ceiling in Terminal 2, with the new tiles brightening the space, reducing noise, and enhancing passenger comfort.

The tiles, composed of 76% recycled content, were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance, contributing to both the aesthetics and functionality of the terminal.

Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland said:

The recent replacement of our ceiling in Terminal 2 has made a significant improvement for passenger experience here at OAK in terms of both aesthetics and function. Our team was committed to ensuring that this project was completed in an environmentally sustainable way. We accomplished this with the selection of our new ceilings composed of recycled materials and with the recycling of our previous ceiling treatment.

The primary contractor for this project, Turner Construction Company, partnered with Armstrong World Industries to recycle the old ceiling tiles. These covered over 68,000 square feet and saved nearly 50,000 pounds of material from landfills.

The environmental benefits of the project included reducing construction waste, increasing recycling streams, and lowering the carbon footprint associated with producing new ceiling materials. The effort also preserved 163.7 tonnes of CO2, aligning with OAK’s commitment to sustainability.
