Work is underway to assess where the Vantaa Light Rail line could end within the core area of Helsinki Airport, following approval of the project’s updated plan by Vantaa City Council on 17 November.

The Vantaa light rail alliance will now collaborate with Finavia to determine the most practical location for the tramway’s final stop.

The supplementary planning effort will examine two potential alignments near the airport terminals. One option places the stop on Terminaalitie, while the other positions it on Teletie. Both would require adjustments to airport operations or adjacent infrastructure. According to Finavia, the Terminaalitie option would affect ground traffic routes within the airport area, whereas the Teletie option would require changes to parts of the apron used by aircraft.

The analysis will consider passenger flows, interchange with other transport modes and how each option fits into the long-term development of the airport and the surrounding Aviapolis district. Security requirements associated with critical infrastructure will also be factored into the design process. A cost estimate will be compiled as part of the review.

We are very pleased with the decision that the political decision-makers of Vantaa were ready to give the Vantaa light rail alliance a mandate to plan the light rail up to the airport area together with Finavia. This way, the benefits brought by the tramway can be utilised as soon as possible.

A final decision on the placement of the airport terminal stop is expected by the end of 2027. Finavia owns the airport buildings, nearby properties and adjacent land, making its involvement central to the planning effort.

Finavia’s Senior Vice President for Commercial and Real Estate Development, Ulla Serlenius said:

We are very pleased with the positive decision of the City Council of Vantaa to launch the Vantaa Light Rail project. Good and comprehensive transport connections are one of the airport's strengths, serving passengers as well as hundreds of companies in the area and their thousands of employees. The airport’s different stop options have been discussed in good cooperation with the light rail alliance. From Finavia’s point of view, the options to be discussed now, on the basis of which a more detailed plan will be developed, can certainly be implemented at the airport.
