The Port of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners have voted unanimously to change the name of its airport to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK).
The change is hoped to increase the rate of air travel into Oakland, improving economic across the area.

A second and final vote is scheduled for consideration at the Port’s next Board meeting on 24 July following the vote for the first reading of an ordinance to adopt the new name.
Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland, said:We are proud to be a central gateway to the Bay Area, and we’re proud to embrace a name that reflects both our local roots and regional reach.
The name change coincides with a series of major renovations at the airport’s retail spaces and amenities, as well as the launch of a slew of Oakland- and East Bay-themed retail and restaurant concessions at OAK.
The airport will retain its current three-letter airport code, as well as its existing logo.
