The Mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson has unveiled the next phase of the O’Hare 21 Terminal Area Plan to expand and modernise Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

The city has published renderings for Satellite Concourse 1, designed by the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Design Team.

These architectural renderings showcase a design that emphasises a frictionless travel experience with high ceilings, open spaces, and strategic daylighting.

Mayor Johnson said:

Chicago’s airports are vital to the nation’s aviation system and our local economy, influencing over 700,000 jobs and contributing more than $70 billion in economic activity. Investments in our airports are investments in our communities, creating new career opportunities and generational wealth among local entrepreneurs. This next phase of O’Hare expansion required a coordinated effort from various levels of government and our airline partners, and I look forward to building the O’Hare of tomorrow together.

The new Satellite Concourse 1 will feature 19 new gates, accommodating various aircraft sizes. The facility will enhance operational efficiency and reduce passenger layover transfers.

Construction on the project commenced in March 2023 with preliminary works, including temporary taxiways and gates. The completion of Satellite Concourse 1 is projected for 2028 as an extension of Concourse C.

This concourse is part of a broader Terminal Area Plan that includes two satellite concourses, a new O’Hare Global Terminal, and an underground tunnel linking the facilities.

The City selected AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa as the Construction Manager At-Risk for the concourse and related infrastructure in February.

The Johnson administration now continues to work with design and engineering experts to progress the design and timeline for the O’Hare Global Terminal and Satellite Concourse 2.
