San Diego International Airport (SAN) has opened its brand-new Terminal 1 building, a 1.2 million-square-foot, 30-gate facility that aims to enhance the passenger experience and streamline curb-to-gate processes.

The new 3 billion USD facility includes SITA CUPPS (Common Use Passenger Processing) technology across check-in counters and boarding gates, 66 self-service TS6 kiosks, US Exit biometric face pods at a number of gates and SITA Airport Vision flight information systems throughout the building.

Electronic signage with Airport Vision provides directions to passengers to relevant airline counters in real time, whilst 3rd party integration presents up-to-the-minute security wait times before the screening process begins.

New curbside kiosks & check-in counters enable services for passengers with any airline across the new facility, with the modular, common-use platform inside allowing for the reallocation of flights or counters as demand fluctuates.

The terminal, which opened both on time and on budget, was designed in collaboration with SITA and construction partners Turner-Flatiron and Rosendin Electric to integrate critical passenger systems, aiding in the reduction of risk and ensured timely delivery.

Jessica Bishop, Director of Information and Technology Services at San Diego International Airport, said:

Partnering with SITA ensured our new terminal delivers a seamless and innovative experience for our passengers.

Their systems give us the flexibility to adapt in real time, and their collaboration throughout construction helped us open this world-class terminal on schedule.

Shawn Gregor, President Americas at SITA, said:

Across North America, airports are under pressure to expand capacity while keeping the passenger journey smooth and reliable.

Terminal 1 at San Diego shows what’s possible when technology is integrated from the ground up. From common-use flexibility to real-time information and biometrics, our role has been to help the airport move passengers more efficiently while supporting the construction team in delivering this landmark project.
