San Diego International Airport (SAN) is set to begin the next stage of construction on its New Terminal 1 project, with work focused on Phase 1B.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority confirmed that preparations are underway for the second phase, which will take place on the site of the existing Terminal 1.

The work will see the completion of the New Terminal 1, adding 11 gates as well as expanded passenger facilities, including customer lounges and infrastructure improvements.

From 8 September, the arrivals roadway connecting Terminals 1 and 2 will close to enable safe access for construction crews. Drivers moving between the two terminals will be diverted to alternative on-airport routes, with detour maps made available online. An animated version of the detour plan has also been published.

For pedestrians, the outdoor walkway linking Terminals 1 and 2 will remain open until 22 September. In addition, passengers can use the free Terminal Loop Shuttle, which runs daily between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Shuttle pick-up locations are provided on the airport’s website.

On the night of 22 September, following the departure of the last scheduled flights, the current Terminal 1 will close permanently. Demolition of the structure will then begin to allow for the construction of Phase 1B.
