Schiphol Airport (AMS) has announced the construction of a brand-new parking garage at the P3 long-stay car park.

The new garage, which is set to open in mid-2027, will add over 4,000 sheltered parking spaces to what is currently the largest parking facility in the Netherlands.

Once operational, the P3 long-stay car park will offer spaces for up to approximately 18,000 cars – half of which will be covered. Currently, there are 5,000 sheltered parking spaces across the two existing car parks.

Dieme Ketel, Head of Parking & Mobility Services said:

With this new parking garage at P3 we offer travellers not only more than 4,000 additional sheltered parking spaces, but also more ease and a smooth start to their journey.

The new garage is being built next to the existing P3 parking garage and bus stop. Travellers can park their car in the covered garage and walk straight to the free electric shuttle bus that runs every ten minutes and takes them to the terminal in five minutes.

The new garage will be comprised of six parking levels, with Schiphol stating that building upwards will ensure the most is made of the space available. It will be adorned with a wooden façade and feature an energy-positive roof with over 9,000 solar panels.

Low-carbon concrete will be used in its construction, as well as recycled materials wherever possible. BAM’s overall design has taken into account the efficient maintenance of the car park following its completion.

Eric Moleman, Managing Director BAM Bouw en Techniek said:

Sustainable construction is an important part of our strategy, and we put it into practice by, among other things, using electrical equipment and sustainable materials. We incorporated these choices in both the design and construction of the new parking garage at Schiphol from the outset.

That requires a different way of working together and organising, but shows that more sustainable construction is already feasible today, especially when done in close collaboration with partners like Schiphol.
