Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) has entered the design planning phase for its new baggage basement, with the aid of a provisional tender awarded to construction consortium, Fundament.
Working closely with the consortium, composed of Dura Vermeer and Mobilis, construction work on the basement is set to begin in 2026, with design and planning work set to continue over the next several months.
Sybren Hahn, Executive Director Schiphol Infrastructure, said:The preliminary tender marks the end of an extensive preparatory phase and the beginning of the so-called construction team phase, in which we will work out the design and planning together. After that, we will definitively select the contractors for the construction of the baggage basement.
This is the first major construction project at the airport that we are carrying out using this new method. By involving contractors in the design process at an early stage, we are making optimal use of the market's expertise and are genuinely working together to realise the project. This approach ensures better cooperation, more control over planning, costs and quality and leads to a more efficient execution of complex construction projects at the airport.
Construction will see AMS’ existing baggage system replaced, as well as the installation of a 32,500 metre squared baggage basement featuring over 21,000 metres squared of brand-new baggage systems.
With the installation, which is set to be carried out by Vanderlande, AMS hopes to improve working conditions for all involved, investing over 6 billion EUR into the airport over the course of the next five years.
